Angkas CEO George Royeca took center stage, advocating for the recognition and support of Filipino transport startups within the country’s burgeoning tech-enabled transport industry. Royeca’s remarks came as part of a broader discussion on addressing traffic congestion and improving transportation systems in the Philippines.

During the session, Royeca expressed gratitude for the platform to address President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. directly, highlighting the government’s willingness to engage with industry stakeholders. Reflecting on Angkas’ journey, which included navigating government shutdowns and overcoming pandemic-related challenges, Royeca emphasized the resilience of the company and its commitment to providing safe and reliable motorcycle taxi services.

A key point in Royeca’s address was the importance of promoting homegrown transport solutions alongside foreign counterparts. While acknowledging the contributions of companies like Grab and foodpanda, he urged policymakers to give due recognition to Filipino startups such as JoyRide, Ding Dong, and Para Express. Royeca stressed that supporting local tech-enabled products not only strengthens the economy but also creates job opportunities across the nation.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who presided over the Bagong Pilipinas Townhall Meeting on Traffic last 10 April 2024, echoed Royeca’s sentiments regarding the significance of motorcycle taxis in Filipino daily life. He emphasized the government’s commitment to identifying opportunities for expanding motorcycle taxi services to better serve citizens.

Royeca further emphasized the role of motorcycle taxis as a complementary system to the existing mass transport infrastructure. He called on government officials to integrate motorcycle taxis into national transport plans, particularly in efforts to decongest Metro Manila. President Marcos Jr. signaled openness to expanding motorcycle taxi services beyond the capital region, aligning with the government’s broader objectives of improving transportation accessibility nationwide.
