Union Bank of the Philippines (UnionBank) has yet again set a remarkable precedent by becoming the first bank in the Philippines to deploy workloads on Amazon Web Services (AWS) Local Zones in Manila, Philippines.

“This is a huge development in the AWS expansion in the Asian region and addresses response time issues for mission-critical applications that require low latency. This in turn allows service providers like us to deliver digital solutions to our customers much better,” according to Ryan Acosta, UnionBank’s Head for Infrastructure and Service Management.

UnionBank, as the vanguard of innovation in the Philippine banking landscape, has been making substantial investments in cloud-enabled solutions as part of its ongoing commitment to enhance customer service. The bank achieved a historic milestone when it became the first major financial institution in the Philippines to fully embrace cloud computing, concluding its migration to AWS in 2022, two (02) weeks ahead of schedule.

This strategic shift to the cloud has ushered in a slew of improvements in various aspects of the bank’s daily operations. UnionBank has witnessed a reduction in IT expenditures, the eradication of downtime and system latency, and the enhancement of backup and disaster recovery capabilities. These advancements have translated into a superior banking experience for its customers.

“True to its core value of innovation, UnionBank has once again become the first mover in this space, leveraging cloud technology to bring even more value to our customers. We have always been proud of being a company of industry firsts, and I’m confident that with the AWS Local Zones location in Manila, we will be able to do even more,” said Dennis Omila, UnionBank’s Chief Technology and Operations Officer.

With the recent introduction of AWS Local Zones in the Philippines, UnionBank has further fortified its position as a pioneer in the local banking sector. This move not only solidifies its status as an industry leader but also facilitates more meaningful and relevant customer interactions. This initiative aligns seamlessly with UnionBank’s “Tech-Up” Pilipinas advocacy, which seeks to empower Filipinos and contribute to national development through technology, innovation, and collaborative endeavors.

The bank’s proactive approach to embracing cloud technology sets a commendable example for the entire financial sector, emphasizing the importance of innovation in providing top-notch customer service. UnionBank’s pioneering spirit in this arena is poised to make a lasting impact on the banking landscape in the Philippines.
