Ortigas Malls is inviting everyone to join their monthly Sustainability Yard Sale drive, a vibrant initiative aimed at fostering awareness and participation in recycling, upcycling, and sustainable practices within the Philippines. Taking place every second Sunday of the month, this event offers a platform for people to buy and sell preloved items, upcycle materials, and donate to a good cause. The Yard Sale is held at two locations: Greenhills and Estancia, from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

At the heart of this initiative is the promotion of the circular economy in the Philippines, emphasizing the importance of reusing and repurposing items that might otherwise end up in landfills. Upcycling, a creative practice that involves transforming old or discarded materials into new and functional works of art, is at the forefront of this movement.

“The event promotes the reduction of plastic materials that deeply hurt the environment. It also encourages individuals, organizations and institutions to intensify their environmental campaigns. It’s a convenient way to help organizations and other institutions raise funds by recycling ‘junk’ and showcasing and selling their upcycled products,” according to Aireen Cruz, Yard Sale organizer.

The Yard Sale showcases the talent of upcycling artists and enthusiasts who see potential in items that have outlived their original purpose. Old furniture, containers, textiles, glassware, and even electronic components are given new life through innovative transformations. This event is not only an opportunity to reduce waste but also a platform for individuals to express their creativity and tell stories of transformation through unique creations.

Numerous organizations, including NGOs, LGU barangays, and schools, actively participate in the Yard Sale every second Sunday of the month. Among the buyers are Envirocycle, a full-service e-waste recycling company dedicated to minimizing electronic waste in landfills, and the environmental organization Philippine Advocates for the Care of the Planet, Inc. (PACOPI).

Sellers include residents from barangays such as Addition Hills, Wack Wack, Batis, and Pasadena, as well as institutions like La Salle Greenhills and La Salle Greenhills Alternative Education, and BJMP Dorms. Exhibitors from organizations like KILUS Foundation, KILOS, Akbayanihan Eco Store, RVM, and RCAM also participate, demonstrating their commitment to cleaning up and protecting the environment through recycling and upcycling efforts.

Shoppers attending the Yard Sale have the opportunity to win raffle prizes from Yard Sale partners. Additionally, a lively Zumba session is scheduled to boost morning energy levels, and the first 100 customers to register onsite will receive complimentary coffee and pandesal.

Join the Greenhills Yard Sale and contribute to the circular economy by showcasing your upcycling skills or discovering unique items from sellers. You can also visit the Yard Sale at Estancia, Pasig City, which began last 13 August 2023. Don’t miss the next Yard Sale, scheduled for 08 October 2023.
