Mozilla, the global non-profit advocate for the open web, has announced the evolution of Firefox Rocket to Firefox Lite, a fast and lightweight Android browser designed exclusively for Asia users.

A year after it was successfully launched in Indonesia, Mozilla decided to expand the market for this lightweight but feature-packed browser to the Philippines, India, and Thailand – with 729 million internet users combined. Firefox Lite requires less than 4MB of storage space to install, making it the smallest amongst major web browsers for Android devices. This new mobile browser comes with a Turbo Mode, which blocks third-party content such as ads on web pages – allowing sites to load faster and consume fewer data.

This version of Firefox can also save a whole screen to read offline with just a single tap on the toolbar. The website link is automatically saved, giving users an option to return whenever they want to go online. Same with all the Firefox variants for both desktop and mobile, Firefox Lite is also equipped with Private Browsing and Tracking Protection features to help prevent users’ browsing data from being collected and/or tracked by the websites that they visit.

Together with this announcement, Mozilla revealed strategic partnerships with Cherry Mobile and ExpressVPN. Upcoming devices from Cherry Mobile will come pre-installed with Firefox Lite, while ExpressVPN will be offering a free 7-day trial to help users secure their connections and ensure their data is not exposed to prying eyes or malicious actors.

“We are proud to see that Firefox Lite is growing fast and with high security with supports from Cherry Mobile and ExpressVPN. Our mission is to empower more users to access the mobile web securely,” according to Charles Chen, Head of Business Development of Mozilla in Asia.

Firefox Lite from Mozilla is now available in Google Play store.
