YouTube has announced the implementation of disclosure labels for videos created with Generative AI technology, aiming to address concerns about misinformation and enhance transparency on its platform.

The new tool, integrated into Creator Studio, mandates creators to disclose when content produced using altered or synthetic media, including Generative AI, could easily be mistaken for reality. This move comes amidst the increasing use of generative AI in content creation, raising concerns about its potential to mislead viewers.

Examples of content requiring disclosure include digitally altering a person’s likeness, manipulating footage of real events or places, and generating realistic scenes depicting fictional major events. Labels indicating the use of altered or synthetic media will be visible in the video’s expanded description and prominently within the video player, particularly for sensitive topics like health or news.

The implementation of these labels will be gradually rolled out across all YouTube platforms in the coming weeks to ensure consistency and clarity for viewers. This initiative aligns with YouTube’s commitment to responsible AI innovation and builds upon previous disclosure requirements announced in November 2023.

While acknowledging the legitimate uses of Generative AI in the creative process, such as script generation or productivity enhancement, YouTube emphasizes the importance of transparency in distinguishing altered or synthetic content from authentic material.

Google, YouTube’s parent company, is actively collaborating with industry partners through initiatives like the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) to promote trust and accountability in online content.

In addition to the disclosure labels, Google is also working on updating its privacy processes to address requests for the removal of AI-generated or synthetic content that simulates identifiable individuals. This global initiative underscores Google’s commitment to safeguarding user privacy and maintaining the integrity of its platforms.
