As we celebrate the 125th anniversary of Philippine Independence Day — commemorating the liberation from Spanish rule — we celebrate our freedom and taking pride in our Filipino identity is always a joyous occasion. Throughout the years, Google has been a steadfast ally of the Philippines, standing in unity with us. Aside from the Philippine Independence Day Doodle, Google showcases occasional Filipino-themed Doodles, showcasing various aspects of our rich culture.

These Pinoy Doodles capture the essence of Filipino culture in diverse ways, highlighting historical heroes and influential figures, local cultural icons, and the breathtaking landscapes found throughout the country. Through these artistic tributes, Google ensures that the Philippines is recognized and celebrated as a true treasure of the world.

Here are five (05) Google Doodles worth revisiting:

Jose Rizal’s 158th Birthday

In 2019, Google honored the Philippines’ national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal in a Doodle that became an integral part of Filipino pride celebrations. The Doodle prominently featured Dr. Rizal’s image, with the word “Google” stylized in a manner reminiscent of the iconic cover of his renowned novel, Noli Me Tangere. The artwork also included the titles of both of his masterpiece novels at the bottom, symbolizing his literary contributions. Adding to the homage, the background of the illustration incorporated excerpts from the opening passages of the novel, while the presence of a quill and a magnifying glass paid tribute to Dr. Rizal’s dual professions as a writer and ophthalmologist.

The Adobo Doodle

Earlier this year, Google showcased the beloved Filipino dish, adobo, as a centerpiece of celebration for Filipino culture. The delectable artwork, created by Filipino-American Google artist Anthony Irwin, captures the irresistible essence of adobo, a dish enjoyed in various delicious variations across different cooks, households, and restaurants. The illustration features unmistakable Filipino elements, such as the Pinoy kids on the side and the presence of traditional wooden utensils, while the core of the Doodle beautifully showcases the ingredients that compose adobo, including vegetables and meats.

The Legendary Las Piñas Bamboo Organ

The Las Piñas Bamboo Organ, a remarkable feat of engineering and artistry, unquestionably earns the distinction of being a national treasure. Commemorating its 195th anniversary in 2019, a Google Doodle instilled immense pride in the Philippines by paying tribute to this unique achievement — the oldest, largest, and sole bamboo pipe organ in the world. The Doodle itself is a testament to simplicity and impact: the bamboo pipes form the letters G, L, and E of Google, while the two Os are represented by the complete organ. If you have yet to experience the marvel that is the Las Piñas Bamboo Organ at the St. Joseph Parish Church, consider this your sign to visit and witness its splendor firsthand.

The Colorful Regatta de Zamboanga

The Philippines’ cultural richness extends beyond Manila, encompassing its 7,107 islands with diverse traditions and rituals. One such captivating event is the Regatta de Zamboanga, a vibrant fluvial race held annually in October, featuring intricately designed vintas — outrigger boats with vibrant sails. Google’s Doodle for the Regatta celebrated the event with a straightforward yet captivating depiction of a fleet of boats spelling out “Google” on their sails, capturing the essence of this extraordinary celebration in a unique and unforgettable way.

Rosa Sevilla de Alvero’s 142nd Birthday

Rosa Sevilla de Alvero, a prominent figure in Filipino history, made significant contributions as a journalist, educator, and suffragist. Influenced by revolutionary discussions on battling educational colonialism, she founded the Instituto de Mujeres, one of the earliest women’s schools in the country, at the age of 21. Under her leadership, the institute became a center for progress, empowering women through education on suffrage, vocational training, and the Tagalog language. Alvero also collaborated with renowned Tagalog poets to introduce the first balagtasan, igniting a movement for Tagalog as the national language. In her unwavering pursuit of women’s rights, she formed the Liga Nacional de Damas Filipinas, rallying women across the country to join her suffrage campaign.
