Instructure, the global leader in educational technology, unveiled groundbreaking trends in the education sector during the CanvasConnect Philippines 2023 conference. The event, held at the historical Manila Hotel last 22 August 2023, brought together educators and industry leaders to explore emerging trends that are reshaping the Philippines’ educational landscape.

Renowned for its Canvas learning management system (LMS), Instructure showcased how innovative technologies, particularly data analytics and generative artificial intelligence (AI), are setting new standards in education. The conference focused on best practices, the future of learning, and the crucial role of technology in education.

Melissa Loble, Chief Customer Experience Officer at Instructure, emphasized the shift towards student-centric learning in the post-pandemic era. Institutions are moving beyond traditional degree programs and are now offering non-degree courses and credentials, allowing students to tailor their educational journey to their career goals.

Ryan Lufkin, Vice President of Global Strategy at Instructure, highlighted the importance of integrating digital innovations into teaching and learning processes. He stressed that students today are growing up in a technology-driven world and need to be prepared for tech-intensive careers. Lufkin encouraged educators to embrace AI for instructional purposes and advocated for proper training and integration of innovative tools into curricula.

However, he also cautioned about the ethical use of AI, emphasizing the need for transparency, fairness, and safety in universities’ AI guidelines. Lufkin suggested a shift in how institutions measure learning, focusing on the “why” behind course activities to promote critical thinking.

The CanvasConnect conference unveiled exciting beta and future technologies that will be integrated into Canvas LMS and other Instructure Learning Platform products. These innovations include enhanced learning and admin analytics, bulk module management, flexible displays, AI-assisted course templating, and the beta AI-powered right-and-wrong answer rationale. Additionally, Instructure announced a partnership with Khan Academy to integrate the AI writing tutor Khanmigo into their platform.

These innovations promise to enhance personalized learning experiences, foster collaboration, improve accessibility, boost engagement, and increase productivity for both educators and students.

“A human-centric platform like Canvas, that is safe, equitable, and intentional in the way that it is designed, will allow opportunities to surface for the students — when they are out in the workplace, they have greater readiness,” according to Harrison Kelly, Regional Vice President for Asia Pacific at Instructure, underscoring the pivotal role of educational technology in empowering educators with data-driven insights and motivating students to dream bigger in a rapidly evolving global landscape.

The CanvasConnect Philippines 2023 conference proved to be a dynamic platform for educators and industry leaders to explore and embrace the future of education technology. Instructure continues to lead the way in revolutionizing education through cutting-edge technology, ultimately paving the path for a brighter and more connected future for learners worldwide.
