Google is honoring legendary Filipina writer Paz Marquez-Benitez on her 129th birthday today, March 3, with a specially designed Google Doodle. Marquez-Benitez is well-known for her pioneering work in literature, particularly for her contribution to the modern short story in English from the Philippines through her famous work Dead Stars.

The Google Doodle showcases an illustration of Marquez-Benitez set against a backdrop of shining stars, symbolizing her popular short story’s title. Dead Stars is a love story between engaged lawyer Alfredo Salazar and the charming Julia Salas, framed as a somber and melancholic tale that explores the American occupation’s impact on local culture and social norms.

Apart from being a successful author, Marquez-Benitez was also a popular writing professor at the University of the Philippines until her retirement in 1951. Her work and teachings at UP inspired and encouraged many highly-regarded writers over the years. Moreover, she founded the Philippine Women’s University, a pioneering educational institution that helped advance women’s education in the country.

“Google Philippines is proud to honor an important figure in Philippine literature, Paz Marquez-Benitez. Our rich literary heritage would definitely not be the same today without Marquez-Benitez’s impactful contributions, not only with her creations, but also with her valuable mentorship of a long line of writers in the country,” according to Mervin Wenke, Head of Communications and Public Affairs for Google Philippines.
