Mozilla, the global non-profit organization behind the open-source web browser Firefox, has announced that its widely-used Firefox Accounts will be rebranded as Mozilla Accounts effective 01 November 2023. This change is part of Mozilla’s efforts to ensure consistency in how it references its account services across its entire product range.

The decision to rename Firefox Accounts to Mozilla Accounts comes as Mozilla’s account management service has evolved over time. Originally conceived as an authentication solution for Firefox Sync, it has since expanded its role to become Mozilla’s primary authentication and account management service for a wide array of products and services. With millions of active account customers worldwide, the name “Firefox” no longer fully encapsulates the breadth of Mozilla’s offerings, the organization said. The renaming is intended to create a unified and coherent brand experience across all Mozilla platforms, ultimately boosting awareness of Mozilla’s extensive product portfolio.

Users need not worry about taking any specific actions or creating new accounts in light of this renaming. The change is primarily in the account’s name and branding. User login credentials, including email addresses and passwords, will remain unchanged. This means you will continue to have access to all your account data and subscriptions as before.

The organization assures Mozilla Account holders that their sign-in information, including usernames and passwords, will remain the same. The renaming process does not involve any changes to these credentials.

For those accustomed to using Google or Apple credentials to access their Mozilla Accounts, this functionality will remain unaffected. Mozilla Account customers can still sign in using their Google or Apple login details, the organization said in an FAQ.

Throughout the renaming process, your account data, settings, functionality, and subscriptions will remain entirely unaffected. There is no need to be concerned about any disruption to your user experience. While the name is changing, Mozilla has opted to keep the URL for account access the same at accounts.firefox.com. This decision has been made to ensure that users experience a smooth and familiar transition.

Users of the service will continue to receive emails from [email protected]. This email address will still be used for all communications related to Mozilla accounts — an approach intended to maintain consistency and help users identify official correspondence from Mozilla.

Mozilla emphasizes that there are no substantive changes to its terms of service or privacy policy as a direct result of this renaming. Users can continue to rely on Mozilla’s commitment to privacy and security.
