A total of 708 transistor radio units were donated by Shopee to the Philippine Department of Education (DepEd) aimed at helping students in rural areas continue to learn despite challenges that the pandemic has posed upon their education.

Known as Last Mile Schools, these are public educational institutions in geographically isolated and conflict-affected areas (GIDCA), which normally has limited to no access to electricity and reliable Internet connection. With the country still under some quarantine restrictions, students attending these schools face even more obstacles in pursuing their education. Fortunately, they can continue their learning by using the transistor radios to tune in to DepEd’s education broadcasts.   

According to Martin Yu, Associate Director at Shopee Philippines, “Shopee is humbled to be a part of this meaningful initiative with DepEd, where we can work to improve the lives of students in Last Mile Schools. Children are our future, so we sincerely hope that the donation of these transistor radios will help children in rural areas continue learning safely from their homes.”

This initiative is the latest effort of the leading eCommerce platform to advocate for Filipino children’s welfare through education — part of Shopee’s bigger vision of leveraging the digital ecosystem to provide opportunities for the country’s future generation.

The company further commits to uplifting local communities with the launch of Shopee Bayanihan: Pamaskong Pambata, a charity drive to raise funds for twelve (12) local foundations geared towards empowering impoverished children:

  3. Young Focus for Education and Development Foundation, Inc.
  4. Fundlife International, Inc.
  5. GMA Kapuso Foundation, Inc.
  6. Save the Children Philippines
  7. Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Philippines, Inc.
  8. Project Pearls, Inc.
  9. Project Smile Philippines
  10. Kythe Foundation, Inc.
  11. PGH Medical Foundation, Inc.
  12. CRIBS Foundation, Inc.

Shopee introduced a wide range of in-app initiatives to raise funds and increase awareness for the children’s needs. The eCommerce platform also has partnered with World Vision to put a spotlight on their Abutin Na10 campaign, a fundraising drive to support DepEd’s education continuity plans. Proceeds will go towards equipping students with tools for distance learning.
