Alibaba has introduced Wan2.1-VACE (Video All-in-one Creation and Editing), a powerful open-source model designed to transform the landscape of video generation and editing. As part of its Wan2.1 large video model series, Wan2.1-VACE is the first of its kind to offer a unified AI-driven solution that integrates multiple video editing functions in a single framework.

This advanced model supports multi-modal inputs — including text, images, and video — allowing content creators to perform a wide range of editing tasks from one platform. These include frame referencing, video repainting, spatio-temporal extension, and selective modification of video areas. The integration of these capabilities into a cohesive system marks a significant leap in both efficiency and creative flexibility.

Wan2.1-VACE empowers users to generate videos from still images, animate referenced characters, control motion paths, and seamlessly replace or modify video elements. With features like pose transfer, depth control, and background-preserving edits, the model enables users to craft visually compelling content with precision and ease.

Underpinning Wan2.1-VACE is Alibaba’s innovative Video Condition Unit (VCU), a unified interface that handles multimodal inputs, and a Context Adapter structure that encodes temporal and spatial task requirements. These advancements allow the model to accommodate a broad spectrum of video synthesis tasks, making it suitable for short-form content, advertising, film post-production, and educational materials.

The model is available in two sizes: a 14-billion-parameter version and a lighter 1.3-billion-parameter version. Both can be accessed for free via Hugging Face, GitHub, and Alibaba Cloud’s ModelScope platform.

With the release of Wan2.1-VACE, Alibaba continues its push for democratized AI innovation. Since February 2025, the company has open-sourced multiple models under the Wan2.1 umbrella, collectively amassing over 3.3 million downloads. By lowering the entry barrier for businesses and developers, Alibaba aims to accelerate the adoption of AI-powered video creation tools across industries.
