I was able to squeeze delivery of three (03) Mozilla talks during the week of 05 to 11 February 2018. To chronicle what has transpired during these three (03) events, I have this blog post…

Prof. Belay Montes’ Class at UP Diliman

I was invited by Prof. Belay Montes to give a technology talk to her class at the UP (University of the Philippines) Diliman Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute (EEEI) in Diliman, Quezon City last 07 and 13 February 2018 (total of 3 sessions, actually — 02 on the 7th and 01 on the 13th). The University of the Philippines is the lone Philippine institution listed in the top 400 universities in the world.

A brief backgrounder: Prof. Montes and I went to the same school system by PAREF (Parents for Education Foundation). We normally joke that we, from Southridge, are the “brother” school, while them, from Woodrose, are from the “sister” school. We met during one of the Internet Society (ISOC) Philippines Chapter gatherings.

I gave the students an overview of what Mozilla as an organization is (as most only know about it because of Firefox), to include the projects that we are currently working on HTML5 Standardization, A-Frame and WebVR, Project Common Voice and the Rust programming language.

The most touching part came a day after my talk, in the form of an email message from one of the attendees:

Being a Mozilla Tech Speaker, messages like this one keeps me to strive and make each of my talks better than the previous one. Maraming salamat po!

Building IT ICT – All Conference

A friend has been organizing Student ICT Conference and she would always ask me to speak about Mozilla in her events. On Friday, 09 February 2018, the Building It ICT – All Conference was held at the Amoranto Theater in Quezon City. Topics discussed by resource speakers at this event include Cyber Security, Game Development, and the Open Web + Rust Programming Language (that’s me!).

PUP Taguig All Out Connect Student Conference

January 25th this year, I received an invitation (via email) from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) Taguig Student Council to be part of their upcoming Student IT Conference (All Out Connect) as a resource speaker last 10 February 2018.

Initially, I was advised that the organizers were expecting somewhere around 200 to 300 attendees. But when I arrived an hour before my slot, this is what I saw:

I asked the people manning the registration table on what the attendance at the time of my arrival at the basketball gym, and their count was already something like 600++

My talk for this Student IT Conference revolved around the role of Mozilla in shaping the Web today and how awesome the Rust programming language is.

Kudos to all people involved in staging these technology events! More local tech events, especially for students soon. Mabuhay!
