Official Philippine Holidays for 2009

The President of the Philippines (I’m still wary of her legitimacy) declared the following dates as the official holidays of the republic for 2009, based on Proclamation 1699 dated 24 December 2008:

06 APR 2009   Araw ng Kagitingan (instead of 09 APR 2009)
09 APR 2009   Maundy Thursday
10 APR 2009   Good Friday
01 MAY 2009   Labor Day
21 AUG 2009   Ninoy Aquino Day
12 JUN 2009   Independence Day
31 AUG 2009   National Heroes Day
02 NOV 2009   Additional Non-working Holiday (just after the All Saints Day)
30 NOV 2009   Bonifacio Day
24 DEC 2009   Additional Non-working Holiday (Christmas Eve)
25 DEC 2009   Christmas Day
30 DEC 2009   Rizal Day

I am just wondering why 31 DEC 2009 (last day of the year) was not declared a holiday.

Watch Out Apple: Palm Pre is Here!!

Good Great news for Palm fanatics like me: Palm Pre is here; watch out Apple iPhone.

At the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Las Vegas Thursday, Palm (the company formerly known as Palm Computing, which is formerly known as PalmOne, and was formerly known as Palm) unveiled the world’s first device to run on the Palm webOS™: the Palm Pre. The new mobile phone sports a 3.1″ touch screen, is 3G enabled, has 802.11b/g WiFi, built-in GPS, ambient light sensor, accelerometer, proximity sensor, Bluetooth, 8GB internal storage, and the thing that Apple people missed in the iPhone: a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

It will be released soon, and no pricing information yet as of the moment. The only down side, as of this writing, is that when released, it will be in CDMA only. Wonder when will the GSM version will come out? Can’t wait for this piece of technology to land on Philippine shores (perhaps, when that time comes, I will ready to retire my 5-year old PalmOne Treo 600).

Nonetheless, this is a very bold indicator that Palm (the company, the platform, the device, the company who started it all) is very much alive and is ready to reclaim it’s turf in the mobile and smart phone markets.

Who is Benjamin Button?

benjamin_button

Who is Benjamin Button, you may ask? I should say, this is one film which you should not fail to watch this year. I was invited to attend the Press Screening of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button last Monday at the Gateway Cineplex 10 in Araneta Center. The film revolves in a very touching story about life, love, and relationships. Here’s a write-up about the film:

“I was born under unusual circumstances.”

And so begins “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” adapted from the 1920s story by F. Scott Fitzgerald about a man who is born in his eighties and ages backwards:  A man, like any of us, who is unable to stop time.  From New Orleans at the end of World War I in 1918, into the 21st century, on a journey as unusual as any man’s life can be, the film tells the grand tale of a not so ordinary man and the people and places he discovers along the way, the loves he finds and loses, the joys of life and the sadness of death, and what lasts beyond time.

Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures Present A Kennedy/Marshall Production A David Fincher Film, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” starring Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Taraji P. Henson, Julia Ormond, Jason Flemyng, Elias Koteas and Tilda Swinton.  The film is directed by David Fincher.  The screenplay is by Eric Roth, with screen story by Eric Roth and Robin Swicord, based on the short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald.  The producers are Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Ceán Chaffin.

The behind-the-scenes team is led by director of photography Claudio Miranda, production designer Donald Graham Burt, editors Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall, and costume designer Jacqueline West.  The music is by Alexandre Desplat.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button opens in Philippine cinemas today. Total running time is more than two and a half hours.

Sec. Pangandaman: Resign Now!

As DAR Secretary Nasser Pangandaman appeals to bloggers:

Appeal to bloggers

Since Bambee’s blog, the story about the incident in the golf club spread through the Internet.

Bloggers condemned and some even put up a signature campaign for Pangandaman’s resignation.

Pangandaman said his family is hurting because of the bad picture being painted on his name and family.

He appealed to bloggers to stop accusing them on the Web. The secretary even warned bloggers against karma.

“I appeal to the bloggers to stop this. They also have their families, they have parents and siblings. Our family is already hurting. I hope this doesn’t happen to you (bloggers),” the secretary said.

Get rid of traditional politicians now! Sec. Pangandaman, resign now. Being in the cabinet will have an effect on the on-going investigations about your son’s incident / brutality. Talking about karma, had you taught this to your son? Maybe, he had thought of it first before getting into such mess. Tamaan sana ng kidlat ang hindi nagsasabi ng totoo!

Now, another reason why you should resign: remember the farmers? I am not just talking a particular set of farmers, let’s talk about all farmers in general. What had happened to the lands promised to them? Is that what you call agrarian reform?

RESIGN NOW! Don’t wait for bloggers to kick you out of your post — we almost did this to the President. For your son, he should rot in jail, before going to hell!
