Internet + Computer = Life! (version 3.20 build update 21012012)

Earthquake 27 SEP 2008

I was in the middle of my PHP lecture to my WEBDEV3 class this morning at around 1100H when I felt the teacher’s table tapping into my knees, back and forth. Then one of my students exclaimed, “Sir, earthquake!”. Calmly, I replied, “OK! Stay at your seats.” We were at the 11th floor of the SDA building then.I forgot that my PC was connected to the LCD projector when posted the event in TwitterFox, so my students saw me micro-blogging while the building is swaying.

The shaking was done in a minute, I guess. One student asked if we were to go done of the building, my response was (verbatim), “We’re at the 11th floor. There are only 2 floors above us. If ever the building will collapse, we have a fair chance of survival. If we will go down, and the building will collapse, the entire 14 floors will be on top of us.” And everyone laughed. Then came the second tremor, this time a little bit stronger than the previous one. By this time, Twitter posts from the likes of Jim Ayson and Charo Nuguid are popping-out of my TwitterFox confirming the first shaking. Then it’s done in almost a minute or so.

So I continued with my lecture, we’re still at the ECHO statement. Then came the DO (security guard), asking all of us to evacuate the building — an SOP. We used the stairs from the 11th floor all the way down to the ground floor ;) nice exercise. I can still feel my legs aching up to now.

Oktoberfest 120 for Bloggers

Last night, Rose and I were present at the San Miguel Beer Oktoberfest 120 for Bloggers at the Taste Asia, SM Mall of Asia. Thanks to Aileen Apolo for the invite! Music was provided by Moonstar88. Too bad, we had to leave early, around 2200H as it was already bed time for Robyn Andi Xeon. But, we (I) did not went home empty handed: I won an ice bucket! Too bad, I wasn’t able to receive the goodie bag, as we need to wait for the show to end before the freebies will be distributed ;) that’s OK. I know there will be a next time.

Azrael, Me, and Jay

Azrael was there, and I personally handed-over to him his Internet Blackout book prize. Met also in the flesh was my long time acquitance Jay De Jesus (titikpilipino.com). BTW, the pic above was grabbed from Az, thanks Az! Hehehe ..

Da Who! Da who ang blogger na nagsilid ng isang dosenang Magnolia Flavored Tea sa kanyang bag? Clue: isa syang girl. Hehehe .. wala lang. Rose and I were laughing to our hearts’ out seeing her putting the iced tea bottles to her bag. Kakahiya. Yun lang!

Reflection on Teamwork

The culminating activity in our Business Planning Session last week was a film showing of Miracle, a Disney film release circa 2004. It was starred by Kurt Russell as Herb Brooks. the legendary US Ice Hockey coach who led his team grabbed the Gold Medal in the 1980 Winter Olympics — against the Russians. This is a true story.

As a backgrounder, The last time the USA won the gold medal in Ice Hockey was in 1960. Since then, it was the Russians who dominated the event every Winter Olympics. With just seven months before the opening of the 1980 Winter Olympics, Herb Brooks was asked to coach the team, composed of amateurs from different colleges and universities. Apparently, his decision of not to have professionals in the roster proved him right. At the beginning, since the players came from different rival schools, they seem to be playing on their own. Every time that Herb will ask a player, “What is your name? Who do you play for?”, the players will respond that they are playing for their school. Then came the time, during their first exhibition match, that they were nailed by the visiting country, 5-1. Instead of going home after the match, Herb decided to have an impromptu  training — it was here when the players realized that they should be playing for the USA, and not for their own schools.

Enough of the film, just go to the video store and rent/buy a copy of it.

While watching the movie, I realized that it is something that our national athletes lack: teamwork. Based on my opinion, the players are not really playing for the country, but for themselves. Thinking of the sum of money they will bring home if they will receive an Olympic Gold, and the fame (read as endorsements) that goes with it. I guess, the POC needs to have a film showing of Miracle to our players on of these days.

Suggestion to Philippine Blog Awards

I am very thankful that my blogsite has been nominated for the second time at the Philippine Blog Awards. I just saw the list of judges today, and was surprised to see that JJ Disini is one of them. Does he blog regularly?

I am not against the credibility of the PBA (Philippine Blog Awards), but next time, make sure to get judges who are worth to be called as one. I just find it silly for them to get the brother (Joel Disini) of the person behind dotPH, when he (they) refuse to redelegate the country code top level domain to the government. One chatter at the live streaming site even commented that if he see’s that an entry uses .PH, then his vote surely went to that blogger.

Just thinking out loud. Thank you! Mabuhay ang Philippine Blog Awards!
