Did you know that today, 28 May 2008 is Philippine Flag Day? Every Filipino household is encouraged to display the Philippine Flag starting today until 12 June 2008, our Independence Day (just a reminder, it was declared that 09 June 2008 is the holiday and NOT the 12th).

The law governing the proper use and display of the Philippine Flag is Republic Act 8491 (view the contents of the RA online here).

Anecdote: One time, our church organization had a Christmas Concert at Don Bosco Makati — I was a performer and a stage crew at the same time. With just five minutes before curtains up, I was advised that they cannot locate the Philippine Flag to be used during the singing of the National Anthem. Good thing, a multimedia projector and laptop was there. With the help of Microsoft Word, was able to draw the Philippine Flag and display it on the white screen in 3 minutes — wheew!

Now, this blog entry from Sharon Agoncillo (Marcella Agoncillo — one of our national heroes; she was one of the persons who sew the first Philippine flag — is her grandma) really made my day today, and to quote:

Survey Number 1

Shaws:  Do you still remember Marcella Agoncillo?
JC:  (gives me the look for 2 seconds).  Uhm, no.  Who is she?
Shaws:  Siya ‘yung tumahi ng unang bandera ng Pilipinas…
JC:  Ah, siya ba?

Survey Number 2

Shaws:  Do you still remember Marcella Agoncillo?
HM:  No, not really.  Who is she again?
Shaws:  Naku, nasaan kayo ng history lessons n’yo? :)

Survey Number 3 (this one’s my favorite)

Shaws:  Do you still remember Marcella Agoncillo?
DJ:  (smiles at me) Ay oo, ‘yung bading?
Shaws:  I hate you!  Bagsak ka sa history!

Solar Sports won the right to broadcast PBA (Philippine Basketball Association) games for three (03) years starting next season. The PHP508 million deal will bring the country’s premier basketball league back to RPN 9 (where Solar Sports is a block-timer).

This makes Solar Sports the exclusive rights to air all of the premier basketball leagues Pinoys love: NBA, PBL, and PBA games. Not to mention exclusivity in airing the 2008 & 2012 Summer Olympics (China and London) and 2010 Winter Olympics (Canada).

I am so happy that I had joined SocialSpark today! So, what is it? And what is in store for me?

SocialSpark promotes social media marketing, blog marketing, and blog advertising. For advertisers, this mean that your products and/or services will be shown to its target markets — makes the world less spammier and a healthier world to live in, thanks to being paperless.

For bloggers, like me and the rest of my friends, what does this entail? Well, I can easily earn by making sponsored articles. Making sure that my articles are seen by its target market — and not by a cold market. What kind of ads shall be placed on my site? Well, it all depends on which categories you had signed-up for. If you hate electronics, then no electronic stuff will be shown on your site.

Another great thing about it is that they are following these code of ethics:

-100% Audit-able In-Post Disclosure
-100% Transparency
-100% Real Opinions
-100% Search Engine Friendly

What I had liked in the list above is transparency and real opinions. Its kinda hard nowadays to see advertisers being transparent to their publishers, and advertisers posting real and not canned opinions. With ads that are search engine friendly, gives me some plus points on SEO — making my site not just profitable for the advertiser, but for me, as well.

So, what are you waiting for? Sign-up now and spread the word about SocialSpark. I am looking forward to receive my first pay-out from them. Thanks to the people at SocialSpark!

August of last year, Microsoft launched Windows Live SkyDrive (http://skydrive.live.com) — an online storage facility that let’s you upload up to 5GB of files and have the option of sharing your online folders to your friends and colleagues. However, many users from the Philippines (including me) were barred from signing-up — not available in your region error.

Just minutes ago, I got a response from Jojo Ayson of Microsoft Philippines confirming that users from the Philippines can now enjoy the benefits of Windows Live SkyDrive.

It seems that this one is for real. If you are going to pass by the NAIA Terminal 3 (Villamor Air Base), you will notice a lot of improvements in its vicinity. A new traffic scheme was implemented in Andrews Avenue (from Domestic Road til Terminal 3) since last week. Sana, this time, totoo nang pagbubukas ng Terminal 3.

Now, just to serve as reference if ever you will be flying an aircraft at the NAIA (hehehe):

Radio Frequencies to Remember:

Manila Tower = 118.1 (my radio unit is tuned to 121.9, which is for Ground)
Ramp1 = 121.7 | 121.6 | 128.8
Ramp2 = 123.25 (Domestic Ramp)
Manila RDO = 5447.5 | 3834 | 124.0 (listening watch only)
Clnc Del = 125.1
Manila ATIS = 126.4
Manila CON = 128.3
Manila APP = 119.7 | 121.1

If you have a multi-band radio unit, you may try tuning in any of the frequencies and hear the conversations between the controllers and aircraft pilots live! (Just don’t interfere with their communications, OK?!)

In a very confusing and contradicting manner, DOTC Secretary Mendoza retracted his statement yesterday regarding his “hold” order on the implementation of the jeepney and bus fares hike effective tomorrow, Wednesday 21 May 2008.

Based on an online report from GMANews.tv, Sec. Mendoza received an order from Mrs. Arroyo (the President) to implement the fare hike tomorrow, Wednesday.

I bet, this will generate a lot of confusion tomorrow among the passengers and drivers.

Foreword: U Mobile, I think I missed your invite to the launch party. I heard that you gave-away LG KU380’s and U Mobile SIM cards to the attendees. You may still send me a unit, just email me {robert.reyes@gmail.com} or post a comment on this entry. Thank you! (back to regular programming)
Free mobile phone service (Voice, SMS, MMS, and 3G), anyone? This is the bold move of a new local telco player: U Mobile (CURE). With an extravagant launch party held this week, U Mobile will be providing subsidized mobile phone service to the Filipino people soon. Some info about U Mobile:

  • It is owned by CURE — one of the few companies granted by the NTC to operate 3G in the Philippines. Was recently bought by Smart Communications, Inc.
  • They use the mobile phone prefix 0999.
  • Free mobile phone service is ad-supported: users are rewarded Php0.50 every time that they receive an ad message.
  • This type of service is the first of its kind in Asia.
  • Their website is http://www.umobile.com.ph — by invitation only (as of the moment).

Based on what I had heard (from a friend in Smart Communications), users will be given a cellphone load of around Php300++ per month. This is very nice. The NTC granted you the permit to operate 3G years ago, why are you just now implementing these stuff? hehehe ..

Again, if the people from CURE (U Mobile) are reading this post, I’m just an email away. I’ll be more than happy to write a review of your mobile phone service soon.
