P7.50 minimum fare for jeepneys reinstated starting Nov. 2

Taken from http://www.gmanews.tv/story/66584/P750-minimum-fare-for-jeepneys-reinstated-starting-Nov-2

Commuters will have to cope with a higher minimum fare for passenger jeepneys when they return from their All Saints’ weekend vacation, after the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) reinstated the P7.50 minimum fare for jeepneys from the existing P7 minimum fare.

In an interview on dzRH radio, Thompson Lantion, LTFRB chairman, on Wednesday said the agency partially granted jeepney operators’ fare hike petition amid rising fuel prices.

Lantion said the fare hike will cover Metro Manila, Central Luzon and Southern Luzon.

Ang P7.50 binabalik na natin ang minimum fare, November 2 na (Starting November 2, we are restoring the minimum fare for jeeps to P7.50),” Lantion said.

This is lower than the increase petitioned by jeepney operators, who wanted to hike jeepney fares to P8.50 – an increase by P1.50 – to cope with the rising fuel prices.

LTFRB earlier this month said the fare hike was “a done deal,” saying it is just waiting for the National Economic Development Authority’s (NEDA) approval of the reinstatement of the old minimum fare for jeepneys.

To recall, LTFRB granted earlier this year the reinstatement of the P7.50 minimum fare for jeepneys in Metro Manila and Regions III and IV and set the date for its implementation for July 2.

But before the hike could be implemented last July, Malacañang issued Memorandum Order 132 signed by Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita, deferring the implementation of the P7.50 fare, pending a closer study by the NEDA.

In the intervier, Lantion noted that there is no fare increase due yet for passenger buses.

On October 16, Metro Manila bus operators asked for a P2.50 hike in the minimum bus fare, to increase the minimum fare to P10.50 for ordinary buses, from the existing minimum fare of P8 for the first five kilometers.

Bus operators similarly cited the rising fuel prices as the justification for the proposed fare increase. - GMANews.TV

Getting Started with IMAP for Gmail

Yes, Google’s GMail now supports IMAP!
From https://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?ctx=%67mail&hl=en&answer=75725

What is IMAP?

IMAP, or Internet Message Access Protocol, lets you download messages from Gmail’s servers onto your computer so you can access your mail with a program like Microsoft Outlook Express or Apple Mail, even when you aren’t connected to the Internet.

IMAP creates a constant connection between mail clients (desktop and/or mobile) and Gmail.

What’s the difference between IMAP and POP?

Unlike POP, IMAP offers two-way communication between your web Gmail and your email client(s). This means when you log in to Gmail using a web browser, actions you perform on email clients and mobile devices (ex: putting mail in a ‘work’ folder) will instantly and automatically appear in Gmail (ex: it will already have a ‘work’ label on that email).

In addition, IMAP provides a better method to access your mail from multiple devices. If you check your email at work, on your mobile phone, and again at home, IMAP ensures that new mail is accessible from any device at any given time.

Finally, IMAP offers a more stable experience overall. Whereas POP is prone to losing messages or downloading the same messages multiple times, IMAP avoids this through its two-way syncing capabilities between your mail clients and your web Gmail.

If you’re trying to decide between using POP and using IMAP with your Gmail account, we recommend IMAP.

How much does IMAP cost?

IMAP for Gmail is free.

Great! How do I get started?

First, you’ll need to enable IMAP in your Gmail account. Once IMAP is enabled, follow the configuration instructions for your client of choice. Currently, only the clients listed are supported for IMAP. If you’d like to download your Gmail messages with a different client, please check to see if it’s on our list of supported POP clients.

When you’ve enabled IMAP and set up your client, sign in to Gmail through the client and watch your messages arrive. You’ll notice that all of your custom Gmail labels will appear in your client as folders, with copies of the messages to which you’ve applied those labels. While we’d like to make your IMAP experience match the Gmail web interface as much as possible, some Gmail-specific features and terms, such as conversation threading and stars, won’t appear in your client. Don’t worry; you can still perform all the usual Gmail functions, just in a slightly different way. The IMAP behavior chart shows you how to perform common functions on your IMAP client.

Please note that every client handles IMAP in a slightly different way. If you’re curious about the specific use of your client, please contact the client’s support team.

Experiencing Net Slowdown?

I was within the vicinity of AIM earlier, and checked my email at a nearby internet cafe (bConnected). I thought their internet connection sucks, took me around 5 minutes after I had pressed the send button in GMail. When I came home, I thought my ISP is broken, it’s sluggish. Then, Jim Ayson sent an email through our mailing list asking if we are experiencing a net slowdown. Could it be another slammer virus attacking the net? One poster even replied to blame PGMA for the slowdown. Hehehe ..

How’s your internet connection now?

Team Sinag to Compete at the World Solar Challenge 2007

Dubbed as car entry number 88, I do hope that the number brings good luck to our team (one of Team Sinag’s adviser is my friend Noriel Mallari — DLSU Engineering Professor).

“Stupidity” of BDO: Smart Money Transactions

I asked a friend of mine to buy me something at Gilmore yesterday. She had already delivered the item to our place yesterday. This morning, my friend asked me to send the payment thru her Smart Money account. So I immediately went to BDO to make the deposit. I inquired the teller on what form shall I use to make a Smart Money deposit. The teller replied that I should use the Orange form (Bills Payment). After filling-up the form with my friend’s Name and Smart Money Card Number (BTW, the amount is just Php500.00), I fell in the queue line.

Minutes later, it was my turn for service. I handed over the Bills Payment form and money to the teller, and she asked if I have with me the Smart Money card. Of course, I will NOT have the card! She refused to accept my “deposit/payment”, as it is in their policy that the Smart Money card must be physically present when doing a deposit to it. What?! Are you kidding me?!

I asked for the branch manager, whom I know since I maintain my BDO account there. She explained to me that if ever there is an error in the encoding of the Smart Money card in the Bills Payment slip, there is NO way for them to reverse the transaction and to credit the amount to the correct Smart Money card account. I told them that I am very much sure of the Smart Money card number, as it was sent to me by my friend. So she instructed her teller to accept my transaction.

I think it is (sorry for the term) STUPIDITY on the part of BDO to require persons loading, topping-up, depositing, or whatever term you wish to call it, their Smart Money accounts to present their cards when doing such transactions. Some people opted to get a Smart Money card for purposes of Money Transfers and Remittance.

How in the world will it be possible for someone who is sending money (hear and abroad) to someone to get hold of the receipient’s Smart Money card? Does it mean that they are limiting the transaction to the Smart Money card holder themselves only?
