Techie Father’s Day Gift
My wife asked me what do I want as a Father’s Day gift. I told her anything that is techie. She first tought of buying two time pieces at Timex, so that we can both have the same type of watches. But later that day, she decided to buy me an HP F380 All-in-One (AIO) printer.

We arrived home tired last Sunday, so I wasn’t able to unpack and install the printer til last night. Was surprised that an AIO will cost less than 5k nowadays. After making some test prints, I tested the unit’s scanning capabilities. Quite good, has a resolution of 600 x 2,400 DPI. You can even make (photo)copies (in black & white or color) even if your PC is turned off. Making my dad think of putting up a sign at our gate: Colored Photocopying Available. Hehehe.
My only comment though is the printing speed, quite slow; and it has no output tray.
Indeed, the best Father’s Day gift I had ever received (my first, anyway).
Philippines’ First Online Event Planner Launched!
Event planning portal launches Philippines’ first customizable Online Event Planner HotOccasions.com, the first comprehensive online guide for all occasions, virtually launched the country’s first Online Event Planner at www.hotoccasions.com on May 20, 2007.
The Online Planner is a new feature integrated into the second version of the HotOccasions website at www.hotoccasions.com as an addition to its already existing event planning features like HotQuestions, which allows the user to send a query to all suppliers of a chosen category, Supplier Listings, and Tips & Articles.
The new HotOccasions Online Event Planner is a fully customizable checklist of tasks in planning your event. It starts of as a preset checklist of to-do items for your event but it can be customized, as the user can add or delete tasks as he or she sees fit. The Planner also sends out e-mail reminders to users when a task is due.
HotOccasions.com aims to be the country’s most comprehensive event planning website. With its new customizable online event planner, users are guided by a pre-generated list of tasks for any event they would want to plan; whether it be a wedding, birthday party, or an anniversary. Users may also add or delete tasks as needed.
Along with the new customizable Online Event Planner, HotOccasions.com retains its original features like Supplier Listings and Tips & Articles. Also retained is the convenient HotQuestions feature, which enables a user to send a query to many suppliers at once.
“The new version of the site [HotOccasions.com] has a better interface that can be easily used by anyone who wishes to plan their events at the comfort of their home or at the office. And of course, it’s better looking than the previous version,” says Marylene Uyboco, HotOccasions Vice President for Sales and Marketing. “The release of HotOccasions Version 2 brings HotOccasions a step closer to its goal of becoming a one-stop guide in planning parties and events.”
HotOccasions.com is attempting to raise the bar in party and events planning by “providing users with a very convenient and way to plan their own events at the click of a mouse,” stresses Uyboco.
Philippine MOODLE Users Group
To promote the interest of using MOODLE as a classroom extension, I was able to gain some guts and formed the Philippine MOODLE Users Group at Yahoo!Groups (since there is not a single brave soul that attempted to promote the use of MOODLE here in the Philippines).
If you wish to join the mailing list, please feel free to email me personally via [email protected] or visit http://groups.google.com/group/philmoodle
You may now also join in the forums website http://www.philmoodle.info

Back to Square One and A Half ..
For those who still doesn’t know, aside from running my own business — http://www.turfsiteph.net — and teaching at CSB, I also work for a company at the airport which is under the Lucio Tan Group of Companies.
A few years ago, my boss (then; he’s in UAE now) asked me to device a way that will consolidate all flight information and these data must be dispatched to different sections within the company with a prinout. Gathering enough information from people in our ranks, who had worked at different airport stations all around the world, an idea came up and the management (as well as the top level management) liked it. This was eight years ago.
The project, after two (02) system administrators and IT managers, was put into a halt in 2001. Just this morning, my boss told me that the new system administrator cum IT manager will sit down and meet with me to revive the project. What?! After all these years? Good thing, I have all the documentation and source codes archived in my office PC. We’re now back to square one and a half.
Can You Believe My Net Connection Speed?
Received an email from Smart Communications, inviting me to upgrade my SmartBro Quick Fix application to their version 2. Afer a few minutes, Quick Fix v2 is up and running in my desktop. They included a speed test module for the upgrade. However, when I did a speed test, the second time around, look what I got.

I Want to be an MCAD!
But inorder for me to become an MCAD, I need to pass these exams first:
Exam 70–306*: Developing and Implementing Windows-based Applications with Microsoft Visual Basic .NET and Microsoft Visual Studio .NET
Exam 70–310*: Developing XML Web Services and Server Components with Microsoft Visual Basic .NET and the Microsoft .NET Framework
Exam 70–229: Designing and Implementing Databases with Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition
Passing any of the course exams above will automatically make me an MCP (Microsoft Certified Professional, which I am already); passing all three (03) will make me an MCAD (Microsoft Certified Application Developer).
The big question now: when?

Hearing Two Masses on a Sunday
I am not trying to be too religious hear, but duty calls.
As a background — for those who still doesn’t know — I had been playing the organ (electronic musical instrument, that is, you naughty minded) at our Parish’s 9:30 AM mass since I was 10 years of age. That particular mass caters to the children, where I do belong some 17 years ago. It was not until early this year that we organists at our parish noticed our ever diminishing population: church organists in our parish are becoming instinct. Some of my colleagues had either migrated elsewhere, or will simply want to become an “ordinary” mass-goer. Then came an offer from my music mentor, who currently plays during the 8:00 pm mass, for me to handle one of the choirs and to eventually play as replacement for him.
I was really really hesitant. Why? I had never handled a choir before, and my first impression was that: geez, I am going to play for an adult’s mass (boring). But at the back of my head, hey, duty calls.
Finally, after weeks of invitations, I attended the first choir practice last Saturday night. Sad to say, none of the choir members showed up, perhaps they’re all busy with stuff and things. It was only I and Kuya Jun, my music mentor, who practiced the songs. Most of them, I already knew, but some oldies, they’re really new to my ears. After the practice, I asked Kuya Jun if I can photocopy some of his piano pieces, which are older than I am .. hehehe ..
Then came Sunday, that was yesterday. After playing at the morning children’s mass, stayed for a while, chatted with friends and waited for the rain to stop. Went to mass solo-flight, my wife was still in bed when I left. Nine hours later, I was sitting again in front of our aging Technics organ with a three-plus-one piece choir. Honestly, it was the first time that I felt butterflies in my stomach, thinking that in the children’s mass, I have a drummer, atleast 2 guitarist, and a 10 piece or so Rondalla with me playing (and I am the conductor/organist). Now, I am all alone. I was like an oil factory that night. Missing some notes, and I complete forgot that I was playing for a different mass when I played Alleluia that was meant for the morning mass. Stupid me!
Well, next pracice is scheduled this Saturday night. Still ahve 3 more Sundays to complete with the adjustments.
